Useful resources
One of the major events of the day was the Conference of Directors of National Libraries (CDNL).The Conference was held in the Lobby of the Ville Hotel. The meeting was attended by Heads and specialists of the National libraries from over 50 countries such as Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Vietnam, Canada, Chile, China, Czech Republic, Denmark, Egypt, Estonia, Ethiopia, Finland, Gambia, Germany, Greece, Haiti, Indonesia, Iran, Ireland, Israel, Jamaica, Japan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Nigeria, Singapore, Thailand, United Kingdom, Sweden, USA, Russia, Uzbekistan, Slovenia, Swaziland, Qatar, Morocco, South Africa and many more.
Сhairman of the meeting the Director of the National Library of Switzerland Kristen Marie Doffias opened the session. President of the National Library of France Bruno Racine along with Mayor of Lyon George Kepenekyan greeted all IFLA guests.
According to agenda the Head and the deputies of CDNL were elected.
Hence regional reports from the National Library of Brazil, the National Library of South Africa, from the National Library of Australia, National Library of France were presented to CDNL. After a short break meeting on the issues of digitization (conversion into electronic form) in the context of national and international cooperation was commenced. During this meeting following reports were presented:
“Evropeana – European resource for readers. Problems and trends” - by Executive Director Jill Cousins;
“Digital Library (A digital library service for Spanish-speaking countries of America)” - by Luis Bueren Gomez-Acebo from the National Library of Spain;
“World Digital Library: Mission and goals” – report by Ismael Serageldin the Director of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (Egypt). According to his report 81 countries are participating in International Project and Resource library and searches of pictures, manuscripts and comments to them through the site in the World Digital Library cover over 193 countries on 6 languages. World Digital Library is featured by user-friendly interface and by the World Map; desired objects are presented there as a brief description of author, country of origin and storage resource.
“Questions to francophone resources” – report by the Director of the National Library of the Kingdom of Morocco Driss Khrouz dedicated to existing problems and their solutions Due to French is being spoken by over 15 countries worldwide, an exchange of information and resources is possible ways to improve library sources.
The next session was devoted to the revitalization of IFLA. During the session IFLA President Sinikka Sipila welcomed all the guests: furthermore following reports were presented:
"Strategy and key initiatives" – by Secretary General Jennifer Nicholson;
About IFLA National Libraries work – by Head of Section Monica Rizzo Soares Pinto.
After a short break The Conference continued its work in 3 sections for discussion of the actual problems:
Section A - How to facilitate an access to documents under copyright law. Moderator was Elisabeth Niggemann - General Director of the National Library of Germany.
Section B - Cultural heritage and natural human risks or how may CDNL join forces and show solidarity in this). Moderator was Gene Tan – the Director of the National Library of Singapore.
Section C - Preservation of the digital heritage: regional and international cooperation as a solution. Moderator was Steve Knight - director of research programs for the conservation and consultation of the National Library of New Zealand.
Furthermore, the Conference continued work in sections. Moderators of the sections made recommendations over information received during the discussion. Recommendations made at the sections will be compiled and submitted to the relevant services of IFLA.
Next meeting was dedicated to upcoming IFLA Congress 2015. There was a presentation made by the National Library of South Africa about IFLA Congress 2015 in Cape Town (South Africa); also the role of. The National Library of Iran devoted its report to the National Library in a role of cultural diplomacy.
Hearings were over with presentation of a new Chairman of the Section of National Libraries.
The Conference completed its work.
